The Bayside Park neighborhood experiences flooding during major and minor rain events. The drainage system consists primarily of roadside ditches that drain into larger arterial ditches that flow to Bayou Phillip. The current drainage infrastructure is undersized and insufficient to meet the large flow of the area, and the ditches are unmaintained due to limited right-of-entry. In response to the community’s needs, the Hancock County Board of supervisors retained BMA to provide design plans and supporting documents, construction administration, and assistance with the right-of-entry or easement acquisitions.
The project consists of replacing drainage culverts at nine road crossings and clearing and widening the arterial ditches and was split into two phases. Phase 1 includes the installation of one bridge and two aluminum box culverts and replacing and upsizing of four drainage culverts. Phase 2 includes installing one bridge, replacing and upsizing the drainage culvert at one road crossing, and clearing and widening the arterial ditches. Phase 1 is currently out for bid and is anticipated to start construction this summer. Phase 2 will be completed when the necessary easements are acquired.
